Description

Explore the Nordnes peninsula on a walking tour that takes you away from Bergen’s busy Bryggen and fish market areas. Nordnes is a 1 km (0.6 mile) peninsula extending into Bergen harbour, historically home to Norwegian merchants while Bryggen was dominated by the Hanseatic League.

Nordnes served as Bergen’s centre of power, hosting the city courthouse and execution site for centuries. It was also the location where witches were burned in the 16th and 17th centuries. In the 19th century, Nordnes was known as a sailors’ hub and red-light district, featuring narrow alleys for undercover activities. Today, it is a residential neighbourhood with families, schools, and parks, feeling more like a small town than an inner-city suburb.

During the tour, you will see buildings used by Norwegian merchants, including their 500-year-old wine cellars, and one of the only streets in Nordnes that survived World War II damage. You will hear stories about Anne Pedersdatter Beyer, Bergen’s most notorious witch, and learn about crime and punishment in the city’s past. The tour stops at the site of Bergen’s last execution and visits an alley voted the prettiest by locals, as well as the historic sailors’ district.

The route also covers contemporary life, passing schools, parks, the Marine Research Institute, and the Maritime School, giving insight into local everyday life. You will also find some of the neighbourhood’s most popular cafés along the way.

Group size is limited to respect the residential area and ensure personalized attention, allowing you to ask questions throughout the tour.
